Kathmandu University - Centre for Art and Design

Realizing the serious dearth of qualitative fine art education in Nepal, Kathmandu University established Department of Art and Design in 2003 under School of Arts. With the initiation of key person Mr. Aidan Warlow, Director, M.A, Oxford, along with two other faculties Mr. Rabindra Puri, M.A. Bremen and Mr. Sujan Chitrakar, M.F.A. New Delhi, and an assistant administrative staff Mr. Gopal Magar, a one-year Diploma course in Fine Arts was launched. Set up on the top floor that was rented off of a public school in a historic vicinity of Durbar Square, Bhaktapur, the first batch comprised of six students.The following year, the department commenced three-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in another building that provided a larger studio area, a small exhibition space and better natural lighting. The BFA course offered students to major in painting and sculpture, whilst introduced Graphic Design as a BFA course for the very first time in Nepal.Keeping in tune with the changing times, this department modified its three-year BFA course format to four-years in the year 2005. Unfortunately, Mr. Warlow could not continue as the director of the department and the responsibilities were handed over to Mr. Sujan Chitrakar, who now runs the centre as Academic Program Coordinator. The department was re-baptized as Centre for Art and Design with an intention to provide different departments under its umbrella in future.Along with Nepali students, the centre also facilitates international students in short termed courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography etc. KUart also launched short termed courses in Fashion Design and Art in Education, with faculties invited from Germany and UK.In the year 2007, Centre for Art and Design (KUart) shifted to a more serene and scenic location at the outskirt of Kathmandu, where it now runs four-year bachelor programs in Painting, Sculpture, Graphic Design, Extra South Asian Arts Studies and Art in Education. KUart is steadily developing and continually evolving to build strong international connection through established art institutes and organizations.

Kathmandu University – Centre for Buddhist Studies offers academic programs leading to BA and MA degrees in Buddhist Studies and provides research facilities for international scholars of Buddhism. The Centre is located at the Rangjung Yeshe Institute of Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery, just a few minutes’ walk from the Great Stupa of Boudhanath in the midst of several thriving Buddhist cultures and traditions. Rangjung Yeshe Institute has conducted seminars and study programs in Nepal for more than twenty years. Today it is among the leading educational institutions in Asia to offer a full range of intensive language courses in Tibetan, Sanskrit and Nepali. Kathmandu University Department of Music

In August 1996, Kathmandu University (K.U.) opened a Department of Music in Bhaktapur, where ethnomusicology (B.A. and M.A.) and practical music (North Indian classical and Nepalese local traditions) are taught to Nepalese and foreign students. The then German President, Dr. Roman Herzog, inaugurated the department during his state visit to Nepal on 29th November 1996. The academic courses are conducted by an experienced ethnomusicologist from Germany and lecturers from the U.S. and Nepal. Teaching staff for performance training includes local musicians and dancers. An exchange of academic teachers and students has been agreed upon and carried out between Kathmandu University and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. SOAS recognizes the exams passed at the Bhaktapur Department of Music for internal purposes. Presently, the K.U. Department of Music is the only university department in South Asia conducting full-fledged course in ethnomusicology. To date (November 2009), students from twenty-eight different countries have studied at the Bhaktapur department. The aim of the K.U. Department of Music is to train competent musicians and ethnomusicologists to document, preserve, and work creatively with the endangered musical traditions of Nepal. As Bhaktapur is considered by many to be the capital of the performing arts, this traditional farmers' town is an ideal laboratory for students of ethnomusicology. The department is situated in an idyllic setting at a 19th century temple area (Shivalaya) at the periphery of Bhaktapur. The Shivalaya was built by the great-grandfather of the Dhaubhadel family, in order to acquire religious merit. This temple area has been transformed into the Department of Music with a library, digital sound recording studio, climatized sound archive, permanent exhibition of musical instruments, computer and video room, seminar room, and three class rooms and performance pavilion spread all over the large garden. A canteen provides lunch and tea. Bhaktapur offers a large number of lodges and private accommodation.
